Overview
This documentation provides a complete and structured explanation of all selling fees and costs on eBay.com.au when you do not have an eBay Store. You will find information on: insertion fees, optional paid features to increase listing visibility, final value fee applied to sales, additional costs (including promoted listings, shipping labels, buyer refunds), fees in case of disputes, international sales fees, and currency conversion charges. Fees may vary depending on your selling activity, seller performance level, and service metrics.
Fees when listing an item
In general, on eBay.com.au it is free to list items* in both auction and fixed-price format. During the listing creation you can select optional paid features to increase visibility.
- Any applicable listing fees are shown in the listing form before submission.
- Limits and exclusions apply; see the “Complete terms for insertion fees” section below.
Standard fees for optional upgrades (eBay.com.au)
Feature | Cost (incl. GST) |
---|---|
Listing in second category | $1.00 |
Subtitle | $2.20 |
Buy It Now added to an auction | FREE in most categories $0.11 in a limited number of categories^ |
Scheduled listing | FREE in most categories $0.44 in a limited number of categories^ |
For full details by category, see the category pricing list
Complete terms for insertion fees
- Each seller on eBay.com.au is entitled to 250,000 free listings per month (auction or fixed price) in most categories, including relists and early ended listings.
- After free monthly listings are exhausted, or if you list in an excluded category, an excess listing fee of $1.00 (incl. GST) per listing applies (see category PDF for exclusions).
- All selling limits on your account (including category and item limits) remain in effect and may prevent you from reaching the maximum number of listings.
- If you list in two categories, you pay the fee for the second category (table above) and all other optional upgrade fees are charged twice (once per category).
- Auction listings may be automatically relisted up to 8 times if unsold; any excess or optional feature fees are charged only on the first listing.
- Fixed-price listings are “Good ’Til Cancelled”: they auto-renew once per month unless all units sell, you end it manually, or it violates policy. Any excess or optional fees are charged only on the original listing.
- Excess listing fees and optional upgrade fees are non-refundable once charged, even if the item doesn’t sell or you remove the feature from the listing.
Fees when selling an item (Final Value Fee)
You pay one final value fee for each item sold on eBay, without third-party processing fees.
How it’s calculated: percentage of the total sale amount per item (item price + shipping/handling + any tax) + a fixed order fee.
Standard final value fee (eBay.com.au)
Fee type/Category | Final value fee (incl. GST) |
---|---|
Fixed order fee – all categories (per order) | $0.30 |
Variable fee – most categories (per item) | 13.4% of the amount up to $4,000 + 2.5% on the portion above $4,000 |
Variable fee – NFT category (Non-Fungible Tokens) | 5.5% of the total sale amount |
Fixed fee – Services category | $44.00 |
Calculation example (sale: 1 item at $6,000)
Description | Calculation | Amount |
---|---|---|
Fixed fee per order | – | $0.30 |
13.4% on $4,000 | 0.134 × 4,000 | $536.00 |
2.5% on $2,000 (portion above $4,000) | 0.025 × 2,000 | $50.00 |
Total final value fee (incl. GST) | Sum of above | $586.30 |
If the item does not sell, you generally do not pay the final value fee. However, if eBay determines you may have completed the sale off eBay, the final value fee will still be charged for connecting you with the buyer.
Refunds or cancellations: you may be eligible for fee credits.
Sellers below performance standards: higher fees apply:
- If on the 20th of the month your level is Below Standard (not meeting minimum standards), +5.5% (incl. GST) is applied to total sales in all categories the next month.
- If on the 20th of the month your service metrics show a Very High rate of “Item not as described” returns in one or more categories, +5.5% (incl. GST) is applied to total sales in those categories the next month.
Complete terms for final value fee
- The final value fee is: percentage of total sale per item (price + shipping/handling + taxes) + $0.30 (incl. GST) per order.
- Item price: winning bid (auction), Buy It Now price (fixed price or auction with BIN), offer price (Best Offer or seller offer accepted). Buyer-applied vouchers/coupons/discounts at checkout are excluded.
- Shipping and handling: includes shipping, handling, and additional buyer-paid services (e.g., Signature on Delivery).
- Order: any number of items bought by the same buyer in checkout with the same delivery method.
- Percentages depend on price and seller performance.
- On the portion above $4,000, a different rate applies (e.g., $5,000 → 13.4% of $4,000 + 2.5% of $1,000 + $0.30).
- If level is Below Standard and/or Very High service metrics, the variable rate increases by +5.5 percentage points (e.g., 13.4% + $0.30 → 18.9% + $0.30). The Seller account page will show listings subject to the increase: https://my.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?MyeBay&CurrentPage=MyeBaySellerAccounts
- If you offer or request contact details to buy/sell outside eBay, the final value fee is calculated on the total sale amount as follows:
- Auction: starting price, Buy It Now, reserve price, or agreed price, whichever is higher.
- Fixed price: the fixed price or agreed price, whichever is higher.
- If the buyer receives a refund, you may be eligible for fee credits.
Costs for advertising and additional services
The following additional costs may apply:
- Ad fees if you use options to promote listings (Promoted Listings).
- Shipping costs when purchasing eBay labels.
- Return shipping costs when the buyer uses an eBay return label.
- Refunds when eBay refunds a buyer under the eBay Money Back Guarantee or in relation to a payment dispute.
- Costs for third-party services offered on eBay, if used.
Dispute fee
When you are found responsible for a chargeback or another disputed amount under eBay policies, eBay charges a dispute fee of $24.20 (incl. GST) per dispute.
International sales fee
If your registered address is in Australia, you pay an international sales fee when the delivery destination provided by the buyer at checkout is outside Australia.
- The fee is 1.1% (incl. GST) of the total sale amount (including shipping/handling and any taxes or other applicable costs) and is automatically deducted from sales proceeds.
- If your registered address is not in Australia, check the fee page for your Country/Region (link below).
Seller currency conversion charge
When you list or sell on an international eBay site, eBay may convert funds into another currency to collect amounts owed or to make payouts to you.
- If eBay converts funds, conversion uses a transaction exchange rate set by eBay, consisting of base exchange rate + conversion charge (fixed percentage retained by eBay).
- The base exchange rate reflects the wholesale market rates applicable to the currency pair on the conversion day (or prior business day); if rates are legally set, it reflects the government reference rates.
- If the registered address is in Australia, the seller currency conversion charge applied and retained by eBay is 3.3% (incl. GST).
- If the address is not in Australia, check the fee page for your Country/Region.
Additional terms and conditions on eBay fees
Billing and payment
- Most fees and selling costs are automatically deducted from proceeds before payout. Details appear in the financial statement.
- If pending payout funds don’t cover the costs, eBay charges the payment method set up in your seller account or collects amounts as provided in the Payments Terms of Use.
Goods and Services Tax (GST)
- With a registered address in Australia, the 10% Australian GST applies to eBay fees. Unless you provide an ABN and register for tax exemption, fees are charged incl. GST.
- If you reside outside Australia, depending on local law, local GST, VAT, or equivalent consumption tax may apply instead of Australian GST.
- Details of any tax charged on fees appear on the monthly invoice.
- For further tax information, see the Tax policy.
Other terms
- Amounts are determined by the terms in effect when the listing goes live and when it renews.
- Fees on this page apply to listings on eBay.com.au. If you list directly on another eBay site (e.g., eBay.com, eBay.co.uk), that site’s fees apply.
- All fees are in Australian dollars (AUD) unless otherwise stated.
- The listing may not appear immediately in search results; eBay does not guarantee specific durations.
- eBay may place third-party advertising on any site page.
